Meeting Again for the First Time

Cedric and I sat down for a moment during our daily walks up and down the San Lorenzo River. to chat with Steve.  I have known Steve for 15 years.  He was a regular at the weekly dinner at Calvary Church. He always carried his guitar but until recently I never knew how good he was.  He skillfully manages amazing chord progressions with sharps, flats, sevenths, fifths and diminished chords.  He asked me if I wanted to play his blond Gibson Epiphone that he bought for $700.  I said, “not now” as I felt intimidated by his skills. Spontaneously a question emerged, “What was the best gig you ever played Steve.” He replied quickly, “last Saturday at the Clock Tower.” There was another guitarist who played with him and Steve said  he experienced a “smile in his heart” the likes of which he never had before. Steve has been in and out of homelessness and employment (mostly out) ever since he came to Santa Cruz 34 years ago.  I felt like I met Steve again for the first time.  

Saturday Bridge Building

Come join us again this Saturday 10/28 at the Clock Tower at 12:00 pm (note the new time) when we will be back again with socks, lox, bagels and meditation.
